Batman by Gene Gonzales

UPDATE:  Final art for this weeks theme, only a little over an hour late. I left my post from earlier here to explain the inspiration.

Ink, Copics and color pencil on 9" x 12" Gray Canson Paper.

Batman © DC Comics

I knew I wasn't going to have time to finish this today, so I wanted to post this as a placeholder. And "FPO" as it were. The idea is to use a classic Neal Adams Batman as inspiration but draw Batman as played by Adam West. The finished piece will be here tomorrow.

Yeah, that's right. We are completely jumping on the Dark Knight bandwagon. Be here Wednesday for the results. :)

Cloak and Dagger by Gene Gonzales

Cloak and Dagger © Marvel Entertainment

I remember I liked the original series, but I LOVED the art. I think that was the first time I saw Rick Leonardi's work and it really grabbed me. Great stuff

Next week's subject: Sugar Skull Girl

Don't know what or who that is? Do a Google search like I did :).
This is actually for another set of commissions, like the cylons from a little while back.
So check back on Wednesday to see what we come up with.

Spider-Man by Joe Pekar

I got a sneak peek at Gene's spidey the other day and saw he had the heroic looking version nailed down. So I figured I'd go in a different direction and do something a little silly.

Spider-Man by Gene Gonzales

Spider-Man © Marvel Entertainment

Ha! Finally on time! At first glance this might look like a Canson piece, but it isn't. The paper is made by Daler-Rowney and I picked up a few sheets several months ago. The paper is listed as artists' colored craft paper. It's pretty sturdy too. This piece was done in ink, Copics, watercolor and white gouache. And it held up nicely. I will probably be doing some more with this paper.

Next Week's Subject: Spider-Man

That's right, next week's theme is going to be a man. Spider-man to be exact. We thought it would be a nice change of pace. (Should have posted this yesterday, but I forgot :))

Next Week's Subject: Brandi Bare

That's right, we're still here! Things got a bit crazy the past couple weeks for both of us, but we're  back on track now (more or less). So we decided it might be fun to try a whack at each others characters. Next week we'll be both be doing renditions of my character Brandi Bare (the red headed girl with pigtails and bear backpack if you're out of the loop :)). Make sure you stop by on Wednesday to see what we come up with.

Wonder Woman by Gene Gonzales

Wonder Woman © DC Comics

For my WW piece, I wanted to mix the build of the New Frontier Wonder Woman with the New 52 costume. Looks more like a body builder but that's okay too. :)

Mixed media on Hemp Sketch Bee Paper.

Wonder Woman by Joe Pekar

Well we never got around to posting what this week's theme was going to be. It's Wonder Woman...surprise! :) I haven't drawn her new 52 costume yet, so wanted to give that a try.

Bettie Page by Gene Gonzales

Once again I am late for the show. I didn't get her likeness nailed down, but I hope I managed to get the playfulness Miss Page displayed in many of her images.

Bettie Page by Joe Pekar

Decided to try something a little different this time. I was originally going to do it in just black and white, but couldn't resist adding some color to it. (at least I didn't make her a red head ;))

The Avengers by Joe Pekar

I decided to just draw some of the Avengers I liked, even if they're not in the movie :) Of course I wasn't going to leave out Black Widow though :)

The Avengers by Gene Gonzales

The Avengers © Marvel Entertainment

I kinda mixed it up this for this weeks theme. I did a really, really light sketch to rough out the placement for each character and finished it in ink. There are some wonky parts, but overall I like the energy it has and it was fun to do. Looking forward to seeing the movie on Saturday.

We were going to do Jungle Girls this week, but since the Avengers is opening on May 4th, we figured we'd celebrate with an Avengers theme.

Battlestar Galactica by Gonzales & Pekar

This is the first ever collaborative piece done by Joe and me. The commission is for Christian, who said he had this idea for a while and wanted to see what we would do with the two generations of Cylons from Battlestar Galactica. Joe and I live too far away from each other to work on a single piece, so we did roughs, and shared them. Working back and forth until we made the two pieces work together. Each Cylon is done in acrylic on 9" x 12" Boards. Thanks Christian!

Friday, April 20, 2012

Next Week's Subject: Battlestar Galactica

Now this will be something completely different. Both Joe and I have been trying to coordinate finishing up a joint commission of the old series and new series Cylons from Battlestar Galactica. We decided to do it here. Come back Wednesday to see the results.

I've been wanting to do this one since the beginning of the blog and I guess I finally wore Gene down! He agreed to the theme, so check back on Wednesday to see if your favorite gets drawn! (of course you can probably guess which characters will be drawn, but it's fun to pretend isn't it? ;))

Geisha Girl by Gene Gonzales

Librarians by Gene Gonzales

My little contribution to this week's theme. I went with a Gil Elvgren vibe here. If you are going to steal, steal from the best. :)

Librarians by Joe Pekar

I warned Gene that I was going to be stretching this week's theme a bit. So here are my 'Librarians' :).

My thought process started out on track...y'know girl with glasses and books around her. Then I figured what's better than one girl reading? Two girls of course! Then I kept thinking on it...what's better than two girls? (3 girls is too much more work, so don't go there :).) Two girls... taking a bath!...while reading! And somehow my brain thought that was an appropriate image for 'Librarian'.

*sigh*

and yes, the one girl is reading Moby Dick... just because I've got the maturity level of a thirteen year old. :)

Did this one with a mix of grayscale markers and watercolors. Was going to originally just do it in black and white, but I just can't resist messing around with color. (thankfully she didn't end up as a red head ;))

Next Week's Subject: Death (DC)

Starfire - Teen Titans by Joe Pekar

ok, I couldn't resist drawing Starfire...shocking, I know! (I'm not sure if I've ever done a color one of her before...i think I've done a couple black and white drawings though...). I loved the Titans in the 80's, but haven't kept up over the years, so that's why I went old school :)

9"x12" copic markers (and watercolor background colors)

Ravager - Teen Titan by Gene Gonzales

I was going to do a classic, 1960s Teen Titan, but someone mentioned Ravager. I have never drawn that character before so here she is. :)

Friday, March 9, 2012

Next Week's Subject: Teen Titans

We decided to go with the Teen Titans as our subject for next week...as suggested by Carlos Lising. We figured it would be a good break to have the variety of characters to choose from and not necessarily draw the same one...though what are the chances I won't draw Starfire? hmm...

Feel free to suggest some Titan characters for us (though that doesn't mean we'll actually go with them, but it doesn't hurt to try ;))

we're back on track this week with Marvel's Phoenix as our theme. Here's mine. (which may or may not have been an unpicked up commission from Megacon ;))

Wednesday, February 15, 2012

We interrupt your regularly scheduled art post...

If you are here to see this weeks subject of Phoenix, Joe and I would like to apologize. Because of workloads, business travel, commissions and preparing for this weekend's MegaCon, neither of us had the chance to finish anything for this weeks post. Just a perfect storm of events and work. We will be back next week with our rendition of Phoenix. I hope you will join us.

Now if you came here to read excuses from a couple of artists who didn't finish the art they said they would...welcome! :)

We now return you to your regular internet experience.

Next Week's Subject: Phoenix

Gene and I decided for next week it would be Marvel's Phoenix (any costume). And no, it's not just because I want to paint another red head...oh wait, that probably is the reason. ;) see you next wednesday!

I had started working on a Barbara Gordon Batgirl piece for this weeks theme, but after seeing all the love for the Cassandra Cain Batgirl out there in the Twitterverse, I changed my mind. I will probably still do the Babs version someday. This piece was done almost exclusively with brushes (after pencils of course). I haven't worked like this in a while so it was fun to do.

I wanted to try something different for this weeks subject of Supergirl and this is the result. This was done in acrylic on a 48" x 12" wrap canvas.
